Studies carried out in our laboratory since 1977 shows that disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to proteins play crucial roles in precipitating brain edema formation and cell damage [3-6]. Theranostic nanomedicine has evolved to encompass integrated, biocompatible nanoparticle platforms that contain both therapeutic and imaging components. These nanoparticles may carry chemo-, radio- or gene therapeutics or combinations of these. In this lecture, several multifunctional nanoparticle formulas will be demonstrated that, with appropriate intrinsic physicochemical properties or appropriate labels, these nanoparticles allow us to diagnose disease and evaluate treatment efficacy, while we track the particles' pharmacokinetics and release of the drugs. |
